“I want to share a few words about Homefront and how it was able to save my life.
I started drinking whisky heavily after I buried my mother (who I was very close to). Within 12 hours after the service for her my sister was hit and killed by a car. I drank so much I became homeless. I was living in my truck, and I ended up getting a DUI.
I then started trying to get sober by searching for transitional living homes. I couldn’t find anything in a safe neighborhood, so I spent my energy and time in a suicidal mood and kept relapsing. Finally, after a trip to the ER I was sent to a long term detox place.
After several months there, I overheard them mention a place in the Northland called Homefront. I jumped at the change and asked if I could go there. I lived most of my life in Gladstone so I felt it would be safe. After spending almost 3 years in some of the roughest neighborhoods in Kansas City because they were the only places I found to try and get my life back in order.
I failed partly because I had to think more about my welfare than staying sober. After moving to Homefront, it took a few months to let my guard down. Thanks to Spencer for not giving up on me. I slowly started returning to the caring, honest man, father, and grandpa I used to be. I now have over one year without a drop of alcohol and have a great relationship with my daughter and grandkids. My relationship with God is greater than any time in my life and I was raised attending church every Sunday.
I just wanted to tell everyone that Homefront has saved my life and there is no recovery house in the Northland that I know of (and I searched for over two years) that a person can work on their struggles without all the distractions. A place where a person can let their guard down and work on things like anger, depression, anxiety, and emotions. People don’t talk about these things in most transitional living places (at least not the ones I could find) without feeling weak and vulnerable.
I just want to thank God and people like you for supporting Homefront. I also want to thank Spencer and Homefront for not giving up on me. I want to add thanks for his advice and guidance every week. Give to Homefront. There is no place like it in the Northland.
